ELMF Call for Papers

PRESS RELEASE 1 JUNE, 2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EUROPEAN LiDAR MAPPING FORUM LAUNCHES CALL FOR PAPERS FOR 2011 EVENT TO BE HELD IN AUSTRIA IN NOVEMBER
The ELMF is the premier event in Europe focused on applying the technology of LIDAR and laser scanning to deliver outside mapping and imaging solutions in a timely and cost-effective manner across a variety of markets.

The second ELMF is taking place in Salzburg, Austria from 29 – 30 November 2011. Last year’s inaugural event attracted 613 professionals from the mapping, surveying and GIS industries representing 46 countries. The conference programme heard 46 technical papers presented by leading authorities in their field, supported by a sold-out exhibition with 51 of the top international organisations in attendance.

The technical committee have today launched a Call for Papers and authors wishing to submit a paper for the conference are requested to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words by visiting http://www.lidarmap.org/ELMF/conference/submit_papers.aspx The deadline for submitting an abstract is 25th July, 2011. The ELMF Technical Committee lead by Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald from TMSI will peer review each abstract.

The ELMF conference is a unique platform on which to launch the latest concepts from commercial or academic research, leading edge innovations in technologies, improved operating practices, reports on actual project experiences and to discuss new applications and markets being driven by the rapid improvements in LIDAR technology. Over two days the conference will focus on the use of LIDAR to support transport, urban modelling, coastal zone mapping, asset management and GIS applications. The call for papers deadline is 25th July 2011.

A key component of the ELMF event is the international exhibition held alongside. The 2010 event attracted 51 exhibiting companies involved in airborne, bathymetric and terrestrial LIDAR and/or mobile mapping systems, including system and component manufacturers, operators and service companies. There were also seven mobile mapping vehicles on display directly outside the front of the conference centre. Exhibit sales will be open to all from Monday 7 June, 2011 but stands are expected to sell extremely quickly, so interested parties are urged to act promptly.

Visitors who are particularly interested in networking with these exhibitors are able to visit the exhibition at very affordable rates making it attractive for potential buyers and cost effective for exhibiting companies.

In addition, technical workshops hosted by exhibiting companies aim to provide novice operators and their managers and potential purchasers of equipment with an understanding of the basic principles and fundamental benefits and technology associated with LIDAR whilst providing the more seasoned experts with up-to-date information on current developments. Delegates can dip in and out of these sessions and follow up with exhibiting companies at their booths to become fully aware of the products and opportunities offered within the LIDAR market.

Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald commented, “The ELMF’s objectives are twofold: first, the ELMF aims to ensure that existing professionals in the LIDAR and mapping industries are fully up to date with the latest developments in technologies, services, operating standards and project experiences. Secondly, we offer to educate new entrants to the industry starting with LIDAR basics and including learning from other users’ experiences, so that they may identify how the technology is applicable to their own work needs.”

Commentating on the location for the 2011 event, Director Versha Carter said, “Salzburg is often quoted as being at the heart of Europe. Centrally located, it is easily accessible for northern, southern, eastern and western European countries with excellent flight, road and rail connections. We are excited about this impressive venue that is closely located to all the local attractions.”

The organizers, Intelligent Exhibitions, have a successful record of 10 years of the International LiDAR Mapping Forum [ILMF] the premier international conference for Lidar and Mobile Mapping which is held annually in the USA. With growing acceptance in Europe of the benefits of Lidar in low cost mapping, the European Lidar community wanted a showcase for their fast growing number of applications, and so the ELMF was born.

ILMF Call for Papers

PRESS RELEASE MAY 31, 2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ILMF 2012 IN DENVER, CO LAUNCHES CALL FOR PAPERS

The International LiDAR Mapping Forum [ILMF], the premier event for the LIDAR industry attracting professionals from all over the world and supported by ASPRS and MAPPS has announced a Call for Papers for the 2012 event, to be held in Denver, CO from January 23-25, 2012.

The 11th Annual Conference was held in New Orleans earlier this year and welcomed a total of 576 delegates from 33 countries who collectively gave rave reviews and feedback on a successful and prosperous 3 days. The technical conference program heard 34 technical papers presented by leading authorities in their field, supported by a sold out exhibit hall with 59 of the top international organizations being represented.

The ILMF is an essential event for anyone operating in or connected with mapping as it is applicable in many areas: forestry or landscape management; utilities including gas and power lines, roads and railways, and even along national coastlines and estuaries. The latest sector which is driving a major new sector is mobile mapping, where LIDAR data on urban objects such as buildings, roads features is being collected in significant quantities to form part of map applications on mobile smartphones and other devices.

A key focus for this event is the three day world class Technical Conference, where speakers from the international LIDAR community will be reporting on latest technology advances and recent projects, highlighting actual experiences and lessons learned in aerial and bathymetric LIDAR with a focus on mobile mapping. Technology advances resulting in faster and more compact data capture systems are reshaping the LIDAR mapping market. Combining these with complementary data processing and visualization systems is now opening up a whole new range of applications, and, more importantly, introducing new end-customers to the cost benefits of LIDAR mapping. All this bodes well for an internationally expanding LIDAR market. With the falling cost per mile of data capture and processing, surveys can now be conducted more often and updated more frequently.

The ILMF Technical Committee lead by Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald from TMSI invite papers on a number of topics all of which can be found on the website http://www.lidarmap.org/conference/submit_papers.aspx . Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and can be submitted online at the aforementioned website address. The deadline is September 7, 2011. Each abstract will be peer reviewed by the committee.

Another key component is the exhibition that will feature more than 50 leading companies in this rapidly growing global market showcasing new LIDAR products and a wide range of new technologies and services. Exhibitors include the LIDAR and complementary sensor manufacturers, survey service companies, data processing, GIS and management specialists and the latest mobile mapping vehicles. The exhibition also houses an informative array of technical posters from academia and industry.

Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald commented, “The LIDAR scanners now arriving on the market are smaller, faster and cheaper to operate, and in addition to driving new applications and user sectors, their cost-efficiency is enabling greater volumes of mapping work to be undertaken than ever before.” He went on to say, “ As the world’s leading LIDAR focused event, the ILMF offers a wealth of interest and benefits to all delegates, users and buyers at all levels: whether you are a seasoned LIDAR professional and want to update your knowledge, or a new entrant to the LIDAR community who wants to find out what LIDAR is about, ILMF is for you. With world class speakers in three Conference tracks on airborne, bathymetry and mobile mapping, and all the key technology suppliers exhibiting, the ILMF is relevant to all mapping sectors and is the main event to visit.”

The Conference Program is complemented by Technical workshops which are hosted by exhibiting companies and are aimed at providing novice operators and their managers and potential purchasers of equipment with an understanding of the basic principles and fundamental benefits and technology associated with LIDAR whilst providing the more seasoned experts with up-to-date information on current developments. Delegates can dip in and out of these sessions and follow up with exhibiting companies at their booths to become fully aware of the products and opportunities offered within the LIDAR market.

Even though the pace of the Conference will be no doubt demanding, there will still be time for the trademark socialising and networking events for which the ILMF is well known!

Flight line Distances (IMU)

There are several theories about what the proper flight line distance should be based on the IMU drift. IMU’s require movement to find themselves and continuing on a straight flight path causes them to drift and loss accuracy. I have seen flight lines as long as 150km and the solution at the end of the line is marginal at best. It seems that the Positional System manufactures (Applanix, Leica and others around the world) have improved their systems but we are still seeing issues when the lines are too long. In addition, if the system is flown long distances from the airport to the project site and collection begins immediately without turns the IMU doesn’t find itself usually until the second flight line collected. S – Turns should be flown prior to project collection when the airport is more than 20 minutes away. A good rule of thumb and it has been this way for sometime now is 20 minutes or 40 miles for higher accuracy jobs and 24 minutes for the 15 cm vertical and 30 cm horizontal jobs. I know this is pushed and sometimes the accuracies work out so I was looking for input from others, that have an opinion on the topic. The nice think about helicopter systems is these guys don’t have this problem typically, If you are one of these providers I would also be interested in hearing what you have to say about this topic.
