LiDAR Data Hosting Site

Please check out this LiDAR data hosting site created by Chris Crosby. It is really cool and would be an excellent site for agencies wanting to host LiDAR data.

LiDAR systems

I was wondering if anyone has comments about the latest LiDAR systems. How they work, if they hold calibration, and if they have issues. I have received missed reviews regarding the ALS-70, Pegasus, Orion and 680. Can anyone provide addition comments on these systems

ILMF Conference Program

International LiDAR Mapping Forum Launches 2012
Conference Program
The organizers of the International LiDAR Mapping Forum (ILMF), taking place in Denver from January 23-25th 2012, are delighted to unveil another unmissable conference program for the 12th event of its kind. With world-class technological research and commercial advances in LIDAR presented by experts from across the globe, the program will be delivering information about the latest new technologies and services around the world.
A particular highlight of the event will be the first results of the US National Enhanced Elevation Assessment. This is a major US National program to map the terrain, built environment and vegetation structure at high spatial detail and accuracy. Driven by the increasing use of LIDAR data by Federal, State and other organizations, it aims to standardize interoperability and ensure multi-use of on-demand derivative products for US Geological Survey Agency business uses, but it will also open up new markets and user communities. The results of a project of this scale will be fascinating for many in the LIDAR community.
Other highlights of the program include papers about flood modeling, forestry management, oil and gas pipelines, as well as wildlife and habitat modeling. New technology sessions will present advances in bathymetric LIDAR and deployment of LIDAR in the fast growing mobile mapping sector, with a focus on urban and street mapping applications.
Alastair MacDonald, Conference Chairman of the International LiDAR Mapping Forum comments, “ILMF promises to be even more exciting and informative than usual; the major US programs such as the National Enhanced Elevation Assessment and the NERC reliability alert, certainly indicate good business prospects for the LIDAR community in North America. This year’s ILMF Conference program delivered by world class international speakers will bring these into perspective and complement a raft of new technologies and services being launched and exhibited at the Conference.”
The International LiDAR Mapping Forum will feature more than 50 leading companies exhibiting new LIDAR products and a wide range of new technologies and services. Exhibitors include the LIDAR and complementary sensor manufacturers, survey service companies, data processing, GIS and management specialists and the latest mobile mapping vehicles. The exhibition also houses an informative array of technical posters from academia and industry.
With career-focused workshop sessions running alongside the conference, the International LiDAR Mapping Forum caters for the whole LIDAR community. Caroline Hobden, ILMF Event Manager, explains, “There is something for everyone at this year’s event. Top LIDAR professionals will enjoy learning about the technologies that are pushing the boundaries of LIDAR, while those new to the community will be attracted to workshop sessions to understand LIDAR basics and just how far reaching this technology is. As always, there will be a great opportunity for socializing and networking with a cocktail reception on the opening night, as well as other social events throughout.”
Early Bird rates are available for delegates if they register by November 7, 2011. To take advantage of this please visit: http://www.lidarmap.org/conference/register.aspx

Accuracy testing

Some agencies are thinking about changing the accuracy testing to include accuracy testing on raw (unclassified) data. This testing would be bare earth accuracy testing in open areas. I have been thinking about any issues that could occur regarding this. I can’t see any issues with checking bare earth prior to classification of the data because these areas should already have the LiDAR points on the ground prior to classification as long as the data is properly Classified. Please feel free to comment on this because I would like to here other opinions on this.
