Picture – Mobile LiDAR data

The picture is from an Optech Lynx system. Notice the coal veins on the side of the pit wall and the detail of the tractor. The veins appeared more detailed in the LiDAR data than in a RGB image.

DEM/DTM/DSM

There has been much discussion about the definition of DEM, DTM, DSM. There will continue to be much debate and discussion on the meaning of these terms. I think and as recommended by other well versed individuals in our industry, more can be learned for publications. One of the best description of these terms can be found in the book Edited by David F. Maune PhD, CP titled “Digital Elevation Model Technologies and Applications: The DEM Users Manual, 2nd Edition”. The book can be purchased at the ASPRS book Store.

DEM-DSM-DTM

What’s the difference between a DTM, DSM, and DTM? Several People have different Views on this so I am posting definitions from Keith Cunningham, Which I agree with.

DSM – Essentially the full point cloud, with ground, structures, and vegetation. (cheapest)
DEM – Bare Earth with structures and vegetation removed
DTM – DEM with thinned ground points (mass points) and breaklines. (most expensive)

European LiDAR conference on track for sell out

In just under three weeks the newly launched European LiDAR Mapping Forum opens its doors in The Hague, Netherlands to an expected 500+ delegates and over 50 exhibiting companies. The demand has been so great that the organizers have had to expand the exhibit area three times and it is now completely sold out. This two day technical conference with an associated exhibition will focus on the use of airborne, bathymetric and terrestrial LiDAR with a particular focus on mobile mapping to support transport, urban modelling and asset management and GIS applications. Whilst new to Europe, the organisers are obviously building on a track record of delivering a successful International LiDAR Mapping Forum (ILMF) in the USA for the past ten years.  Initially expecting a smaller version of the well established US event, expectations are now running high with more abstracts submitted than expected, exhibitors now exceeding 50 companies and delegate registrations coming in.
