LiDAR Training – Webinar

NYS GIS Assn Training Webinar: A Simple Example of Working with LiDAR Data using ArcGIS & 3D Analyst”

Please join the NYS GIS Association for a training opportunity on Wednesday, March 23rd, from Noon to 1:30 p.m.

Barb and Dave Tewksbury of Hamilton College’s Department of Geosciences will present a webinar on a simple example of working with LiDAR Data using ArcGIS and 3D Analyst. The example comes from an undergraduate GIS course at Hamilton College and uses a portion of a LiDAR data set from the Oneida County Planning Office.

Through a PowerPoint presentation, the webinar will demonstrate how to convert that sample LiDAR data set to an elevation raster in ArcGIS. Attendees will be able to download the data set and the step-by-step instructions to work with after the Webinar. The webinar will use ArcGIS 10, but an ArcGIS 9.3 version of the exercise will also be available.

NYSGISA members had a week head start to register, so attendance is limited.

Questions? Please contact Ann Deakin (NYSGISA Education Committee Chair) at ann.deakin@fredonia.edu.

Register for the session now by clicking the link below:

Wed, Mar 23, 2011 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM EDT

Once registered you will receive an email confirming your registration
with information you need to join the Webinar.

New LiDAR blog

This is an interesting new LiDAR blog. Check it out. They are talking about Flash LiDAR in the latest post. There are some new flash LiDAR at 256×256 but the cost can be very expensive. I think these systems provide potential for uses within our industry but show some serious potential in other industries like space or aviation. It will be interesting to see how this technology develops.

This is some mobile LiDAR of a road From a LYNX mobile LiDAR system. It would be nice to see some examples of other mobile systems if someone would like to provide these in Jpeg format to me I would be happy to post.

Hydro-Flattening Versus Hydro-Conditioning

Please see link below provided by Jason Stoker at the “Click” site. In the presentation there are a couple of slides on this topic. Thanks Jason for providing this information.

Hydro-Flattening versus Hydro-Conditioning

I have been asked the difference between these to terms. My initial understanding that these terms meant the same thing but some folks say they are different. I was looking for people’s opinion on this or if anyone knows if there are any papers on these topics. More later once I get more information.

Top 5 Calibration Mistakes

1. Over calibration – The processor adjusts one variable in the calibration rather than adjusting the correct value and than starts adjusting other values to compensate for the incorrect adjustment. changing Heading and than adjusting Pitch slope error to correct for it
2. Adjusting Variables that should not be adjusted like scan angle correct and Torrison
3. letting TerraMatch do all the work, although terramatch is a good tool, it can’t be relied on solely as the calibration tool. It makes assumptions about the sensor that can cause some significant problems
4. Using incorrect GPS and IMU data. If this data is wrong than you will never get the calibration correct. Taking time to make sure the POS data has been processed correctly is key to making sure the Calibration is successful.
5. Fat fingering something incorrectly and not tracking the re-iteration of the calibration when modifying the Calibration file

Any comments are welcome and I would like to hear about your feelings on Optech’s LMS and Reigl’s calibration process which help eliminate must of these mistakes and what you feel about Terramatch in relationship to calibration or in combination with the new calibration processes.

Feature Extraction

The following presentation is on innovations in feature extraction that I did at ILMF. Please let me know what you think. It may take a couple of minutes to come up depending on the speed of your network.
